Kilkerran is the name that has been chosen for the single malt to be produced
at Mitchell’s Glengyle Distillery.
Why Kilkerran? Well, for two reasons. Firstly, because the name Glengyle is
already used for a Vatted Highland malt and Mitchell’s Glengyle Ltd. were
not able to buy the rights to use the name.
They also wished to avoid any possible confusion between the newest Single Malt to come from the Campbeltown region and a pre-existing vatted Highland malt. Secondly, and more importantly, Mitchell’s Glengyle Ltd. are very proud to be continuing and adding to the great Campbeltown Distilling tradition and the choice of name reflects that. Kilkerran is derived from the Gaelic ‘Ceann Loch Cille Chiarain' which is the name of the original settlement where Saint Kerran had his religious cell and where Campbeltown now stands. Kilkerran is thought to be a suitable name for a new Campbeltown Malt since it was unusual for the old Campbeltown distilleries to be called after a Glen, a custom more usually associated with the Speyside region.
Now, can you imagine owning some bottles from the very first casks filled at Springbank? Unfortunately, unless some descendant of Johnnie Walker of Kilmarnock has kept a few, there is now no chance of this. However this is not the case at the Mitchell’s Glengyle Distillery. Here, the first six casks filled from the very first spirit run will be set aside to be bottled at 10 years old thus giving you the chance to own a piece of history in the making. The six casks will be of different wood types and will be selected in conjunction with Willie Taylor at Broxburn Cooperage to ensure that the casks are of the finest quality prior to being filled. Limited to 700 bottles of each wood type, all at 46% ABV, we are offering you the exclusive opportunity to purchase one of each wood type. This amazing offer is only valid up to the date of the first distillation and we anticipate demand will be high. We will therefore allocate on a first come, first served basis.
On the date of the first distillation everyone who has purchased a bottle will be sent their certificate of ownership along with a miniature sample of the spirit as it comes off the stills. In addition, since we know that 10 years is a long time to wait, those who have purchased the full set will be given a special miniature set, bottled at 5 years old to give you the chance to see how your whisky is maturing. As the whisky’s 10th Birthday approaches you will be contacted with confirmation of when the whisky is to be bottled to give you the opportunity to come and collect the bottles directly from the distillery. Alternatively you can advise us of the address you would like the whisky delivered to, where regulations in the country of residence permit.
